We are inviting highly motivated and gifted candidates to apply for two new tenure-track positions at the Department of Mathematical Physics (DFMA). The DFMA is the leading Theoretical Physics group in Brazil, and the University of São Paulo has been consistently ranked the top research institution in Latin America. Compensation and teaching duties are commensurate with U.S. research universities. The DFMA has a strong commitment to support research at the highest level, and these permanent positions are part of an ongoing process aimed at strengthening our group with new hirings over the next 3-5 years.

One position (IF-96/11) is for fundamental research in Quantum Field Theory, or in the field of Mathematical Physics (i.e., mathematically rigorous methods and results in Quantum Field Theory, Statistical Mechanics, Quantum Mechanics, Classical Mechanics, General Relativity, Many-Body Theory, Dynamical Systems and Chaos, Random Matrices, Disordered Systems or Integrable Systems.)

The other position (IF-97/11) is open to researchers in all theoretical areas of Particle Physics, Cosmology, Gravitation and Quantum Many-Body Theory.

Both the application and the selection process can be done in Portuguese, or entirely in English if the candidate does not speak Portuguese. We strongly encourage all candidates from Brazil as well as other countries to apply. The application form and a description of the documentation necessary to apply can be found in the link Rules and Documentation.

Please notice that the deadline for your application to reach our offices is February 27th, 2012. If the documents are posted inside Brazil, the date of postage cannot be later than February 27th, and in that case it is required that express mail service (SEDEX) be used.

If you have any questions, please contact us at fismat@fma.if.usp.br .

Two Permanent Positions in Theoretical Physics

The Department of Mathematical Physics is one of the top Theoretical Phyics groups in Latin America. It has a staff of 18 professors, and scores of post-docs and graduate students, working in areas as diverse as Particle Phenomenology, Quantum Field Theory, Condensed Matter Theory, Statistical Physics, String Theory, Mathematical Physics, Cosmology and Astrophysics.

The Physics Institute has more than 130 professors, and is a leading research institution in areas from Quantum Optics to Complex Fluids.

The University of São Paulo is the top University in Latin America. It has 80.000 students, and its campus is a large, green oasis inside the São Paulo metropolitan area.

São Paulo is a vibrant metropolis which attracts people from all over Brazil, Latin America and, increasingly, the rest of the world. Learn more about our city:
